Barbecue sauce can be a touchy subject. Different regions have different (and strong) preferences for what makes a good barbecue sauce. Click here for a great primer. I’m from New Jersey, originally, so I have absolutely zero stake in which is best. I can find a benefit and use to almost any barbecue sauce. I’ve even shared my lower sugar barbecue sauce in the past. This is NOT that sauce – instead, it probably lands in the Kansas City realm. This sweet and tangy barbecue sauce is thick, sticky, and perfect for dipping, dunking, basting, slow cooking, baking, grilling, and the list goes on. It’s a perfect all-purpose, recognizable sauce that you can adapt to your liking!
This sweet and tangy barbecue sauce recipe couldn’t be easier – you just measure everything out into a sauce pan and let it simmer until thick. It also leaves you the freedom to change it per your taste. If you like a more tangy sauce, then increase the vinegar. If more smoke is your style, drop in a dash or two of liquid smoke (careful with that stuff!). Maybe you want a peppery sauce – so triple the black pepper. Sure it may not be “authentic” but we’ve established that’s not my priority.
Feel free to use this sweet and tangy barbecue sauce as a dip, slather it on burgers or ribs, or baste grilled chicken with it – and that’s just what I can vouch for. I’m sure there’s plenty of other uses. This makes about 2 cups of sauce. So it’s also the perfect amount to mix into the slow cooker for some pulled pork or chicken. In fact, that’s exactly what I plan to do with it next week!
- 15 ounce can tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/3 cup honey
- 3 tablespoons tomato paste
- 3 tablespoons molasses
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (regular is fine, too)
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
Combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan over medium heat.
Cook uncovered, whisking every few minutes, until thickened (about 20-25 minutes).
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for at least a week or two.
